Behind the Scenes of Round Lake’s Water Utility Excellence

One of the most fundamental responsibilities of local government is providing safe, reliable, and affordable drinking water. It is a service residents depend on every single day, often without giving it a second thought. That is exactly how it should be. When a water utility is operated properly, it quietly does its job day in and day out.

But delivering that level of service does not happen by accident.

It requires sound policies, responsible financial planning, ongoing investment in infrastructure, highly trained professionals, strict adherence to regulatory requirements, detailed operational planning, and a commitment to continuous improvement. In short, it requires doing things the right way.

That is where the Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA) has set a high standard for decades.

CLCJAWA has built a reputation as a model for municipal water utility operations. It is an organization grounded in precision, preparation, and performance, where systems are designed not just to function, but to function reliably under any conditions. The focus is simple: deliver safe drinking water without interruption and with full transparency in operations.

That standard was clearly demonstrated this past week.

During a scheduled shutdown of the system, service was maintained without disruption to the public. Because of flawless planning and execution, most residents never noticed the transition occurring behind the scenes. The affected communities had been notified well in advance, weeks and in some cases months ahead of time. Prior to the shutdown, additional alerts were issued, and throughout the entire process, municipalities were kept continuously updated as work progressed.

The result was exactly what a well run utility system should achieve: essential maintenance completed, system integrity preserved, and the public experience unaffected.

The Village of Round Lake recognized the importance of this level of operational excellence decades ago when Village leaders made the decision to join JAWA. Their foresight ensured that Round Lake would be connected to an organization dedicated to disciplined utility management and positioned our community among those committed to maintaining the highest standards in public water service.

Today, I am proud to represent the Village of Round Lake as a member of CLCJAWA and continue that legacy. Participation ensures our Village remains aligned with best practices in water utility operations and committed to the long term reliability of one of our most essential public services.

Water is one of our most valuable public assets. Managing it properly requires discipline, expertise, and execution at the highest level. CLCJAWA exemplifies that standard.

Because when it comes to delivering clean drinking water, success is measured not by what people notice but by what they never have to think about at all.
